It would depend on the program or your uses, if it's multithreaded the i7 but if it's not the i5. But why are you buying the old generation?

i am confused because i5 processor with more clock speed 2.8GHz is available and also i7 processor with less clock speed 1.6 GHz is also available. which one to buy. i use it for programming , internet and watching videos etc..

Please advice me. which one to go i5 with more clock speed 2.8GHZ

or i7 with less clock speed 1.6GHz

Thanks

Either has plenty of power for your needs. I still don't know if the programming software you are using is multithreaded since you didn't say. You need to be more specific.

And again, why are you buying the previous generation?

There are 2 i5's @ 2.8 GHz. Below are the benchmarks for both i5's and the i7.

Intel Core i5 760 @ 2.80GHz : 4577
Intel Core i5 2300 @ 2.80GHz : 5546

Intel Core i7 720QM @ 1.60GHz: 3290

what does this mean..?? Here it seems i7 with 1.6GHZ has less number 3290.

does this mean i7 is less poweful than i5 with 2.8GHz...???

Reply to sudhakar123

The higher the benchmark the better. In this case the i5 will outperform the i7.

Synthetics are misleading as they don't reflect real world performance. And depending on which benchmark, it may be affected by the whole system so a laptop will lose vs a desktop.

Reply to k1114

i did not get what is synthetics.? what deos this mean ..???

and as per bench mark mentioned above is the cause for i am lloking into i5 processor with high clcok speed than i7 with low clcok speed.

could you please explain me a littel better about synthetics.

Which i5 are you talking about?

They are especially misleading when you compare a laptop processor to two desktop processors. Of course the i5 760 is more powerful than the i7 720QM, it has a much higher thermal limit to work with and better components in the rest of the system.

I cannot find a mobile i5 at 2.8 GHz, so if you are really comparing a desktop system to a laptop system the desktop will do much better for the same or less money.

Single 12V rail or multiple 12V rails?

Here I am comparing only laptops. i saw some i5 laptops with around 2.4GHz and i7 with 1.6GHz.
I want to know which is better among these laptops. i5 with 2.4Ghz or i7 with 1.6GHz.

Thanks,
Sudhakar

They are both dual core with HT so will not be much difference, you can see the differences here. http://ark.intel.com/compare/43560,50178 If you are buying a new laptop, I would suggest the newer 2xxx series.

Reply to k1114

wow, here i thought that the i7 are suppose to be twice as fast

Reply to mmike99

i was looking for a better processor for my laptop...figured the i7 would be twice as much a boost. will the newer 2xxx series fit in my laptop.

more information on what i have.

its the k52f motherboard and it has the Havendale/Clarkesdale host bridge.

tyvm in advance

No they are different sockets. Why do you need a better cpu?

id like to have my laptop faster with software, and video processing. what would be the fastest cpu that i can put in this machine, and b, would adding more memory be a better idea?. with the exception of the sound, the machine does ok otherwise. btw, is the a way to get sound from the laptop, while its hooked up to tv via hdmi.(want the sound from the tv as well so tv doesnt have to be cranked up while watching from across the bedroom.

thanks again...

What exact programs do you use? If they are multithreaded then there are quad core mobile i7 for that socket. But you will need separate graphics as these don't have integrated. They end with QM and XM but good luck finding those at reasonable prices. You also need to worry about more power/heat. All Arrandale mobile cpus are dual core, but if you go to the older clarksfield they're quads. http://ark.intel.com/search/advanc [...] larksfield

I could help more if I knew the exact k52f model you have, right now I'm shooting in the dark. Ram might help depending on how much you have. Some graphic cards don't support audio through hdmi.
