I5-2410M Cores vs Threads

I am a little confused about the new Intel i5-2410M processor. It looks like it is a quad core in the task manager and Best Buy says all i series are quad cores. Can someone tell my why Intel says it is a dual core. I think it has something to do with the 4 Threads.

Thanks,
Josh

A thread is essentially a virtual core so the os will see it as a seperate core. That is in fact a dual core with 4 threads, best buy people never know what they are talking about as they are just normal people with no real training.

link to this info? a buddy of mine just bought an all in one with 2410M cpu, and he is not happy with it. they told him it was a quad core, with the i5 notation, i assumed it was as well.
id like to read up on this, inform a bit of what he bought, what he can do to make it run better.. he wont ever read that sort of thing.

Also wanted to add; a thread is not equal to a core, a real core get's more performance, assuming the rest of the cpu specs are the same.

If you want a laptop or an all-in-one PC with a quad core Intel CPU, then you need to get something with a Core i7 CPU. However, not all mobile (laptop) Intel Core i7 CPUs are quad core; some are only dual core CPUs. On the other hand all desktop Intel Core i7 CPUs are quad core.

Desktop Core i7 CPUs are:

i7-2600
i7-2600S
i7-2600K

There are many mobile Core i7 CPUs so I'm not going to list them all. Here is how you can tell the difference though:

1. Core i7 ending with "M" are all dual cores; example: Core i7-2637M.
2. Core i7 ending with "LE" are dual cores embedded into the motherboard; example: Core i7-2655LE.
3. Core i7 ending with "QM" are all quad cores; example: Core i7-2630QM.
4. Core i7 ending with "QE" are dual cores embedded into the motherboard; example: Core i7-2715QE.

If he is not happy with it then he can return it for a refund and look for a computer with an actual Intel CPU with a quad core. It will of course cost more money.

obviously. you can pretty much return any purchase if you arent happy with it. He doesnt want to pay the 25% open box fee.
interesting about all those model numbers.. i sort of wish they just had one extra letter - M for mobile.. just leads to confusion, and angry consumers.
