Mobo: M4A785TD-M Evo
CPU: Phenom II x2 555
GPU: HD 5770
RAM: 4GB DDR3
Hard drive: WD 750GB Black
PSU: Antec Truepower 550W

This is my setup right now. Made it on a budget of 600 last year. Now I'm looking to upgrade.
I mainly wanted to upgrade my CPU to an X4 and my GPU to a 6870. Is this a good idea? I wanted it to last at least a year or so and be able to play The Witcher 2 on a higher setting than medium. I realize I could always overclock my CPU(And buy a after-market fan), but would that be a better idea than upgrading to an X4? I've tried unlocking the cores before, but my computer crashed, so it seems like I have defective cores.

What do you guys suggest I do in the end? Thanks for all the help in advance.

If you get a better CPU cooler you will be able to use it on your next CPU upgrade as well. But upgrading the CPU and GPU are always good for system performance. It is a $$ decision on your part.

6870 is a quite solid choice, rivaling/equaling the 6950 in many games....
