G.Skills Ripjaws x DDR3 1600.

Although DDR3 > 1600 would not cause any issues for Intel CPU ( as they are tested and certified), using DDR3 > 1600 may void the warranty of your processor. The i7 3960X supports DDR3 upto 1600. Hope you get the message. Check with Intel if you must use DDR3 > 1600.

I should probably shoot for 1600 then. I'm looking for 16GB. Either 2 separate kits of 2x4 (same make/model of course) or a 4x4 kit that will read 1600 speed with no tweaking necessary.

I am using the G.Skill Ripjaws 8x8gb 64gb matched quad channel set, and they dropped right in. The XMP profiles match up perfectly and autoconfigured everything. I did have to boost VCORE and VTT voltage a tad, but other than that, all 8 slots populated with 8gb sticks, and now I have 64gb of RAM in this beast. I have the Intel 3820 on the board for reference. The RAM can be found here:

I am using G.Skill Ripjaws Z series 1600 4x4gb in the same motherboard with i7-3820, they work flawlessly. If you're planning on getting 16 gb, it is highly recommended to get a 4x4 kit, and not 2 kits of 2x4.

Did you have to increase voltages, timings or anything else or did it boot up at the 1600 speed right out of the box with no adjustments?

Right out of the box with no adjustments, didn't have to do anything, and everything is working and shows as it should be :)

Depending on your current and future use, if you think you may need flexibility to throw-in more DDR3 in the future, I would take 2 x8GB, provided the price difference ($37). I reckon your mobo can take up to 64 GB RAM; even if you use 4 x 4 sticks, you still have room for another 32GB.

I reckon your mobo can take up to 64 GB RAM.

Hope it helps.

1.35V? This is nuts. Does any other RAM run at this low of a voltage requirement? This is my top choice now.

I honestly don't care about the color, but I wonder why don't they sell RAM with the 1.35V requirement and any other color heat spreader?

I ended up going with the Blue/Black CMZ16GX3M4A1600C9B:

They had them at the local microcenter for $7 more. I liked the idea of the 1.35V RAM you suggested, but I like to be able to bring it right back if I have a problem and this is what microcenter had, so even though it is a 1.5V requirement, I went for it.

They dropped in fine but read 1333 (I don't have XMP turned on). I changed the memory frequency in the AI Tweaker section of the BIOS to 1600 and nothing else. Everything is running great. Ran the Windows Memory Diag and everything checks out Ok.

Thanks for the suggestion.
