PC GPUs vs. game consoles

In my quest for finding the right GPU for myself (which is another thread) I budgeted myself in the low $100-150 range. While asking around for help and opinions, a couple different people have asked "Isn't it better to spend $200-300 on a complete gaming console like Xbox or PS3 instead of spending $150 on a gpu since that price doesn't include all of the other hardware you still need just to play games?"
At first glance what they're saying seems logical but I know it's not that simple. There's more to it than that but I couldn't really explain it to them in a way as simple and logical as that so that they can understand. I just said "you don't get it" and walked away. (For the record I do have PS3 anyways)
Can anybody elaborate on this so I can explain my nonsense to these people?
