I'm trying to figure out what to do as of now to get my comp up and running again! A few weeks back, I came home and it wouldn't turn on. I didn't want to get frustrated so I let it be for a while. Turned out somehow two wires were disconnect from the PSU (don't know why) plugged them back in and something "popped" there was a smokey smell and my motherboard lights were flickering. Is there a chance I wrecked something besides my PSU? I'm nervous, none of these parts were dirt cheap so I really don't want to play the guessing game. I have a radeon 5870, i-7 processor, and 4gigs of ram- please let me know thanks

Anytime you reach into your computer your run the risk of permanent damage just from a single static shock. Now you reached in an plugged in two wires that weren't plugged in before yet your computer managed to run fine before so how did they come unplugged? Odd...

What was it exactly that you plugged in?

As for guessing... you can test the PSU easily enough. Processors are very hardy typically so I would look into the motherboard next if the PSU tests good.

i think your fist step is to replace the psu and go from there.....just wondering, what PSU did you have? maybe you should go for a more reliable brand.

no, you could run 2 x 5870's from that without issue. Sometimes there is just a fault with the PSU, regardless of brand, or you ould have had a voltage spice or a short in your system somewhere.... Do you know what 2 wires you plugged in? and where you plugged them in to? Sonds like something was physically damaged.
