Hey folks,

Just a little while ago we had a big lightning storm come through so I shut down the computer and unplugged the it from the wall outlet.

The computer was already shut down but I didn't switch off the power supply before unplugging it.

Can this have any harmful effects on the computer if it's already shut down?

Thanks,

Unplugging it from the wall has the same effect of turning the switch off on the back of it - you are preventing the AC coming in from wall from reaching the PSU but in your case you did very good unplugging it from the wall. Many people believe the switch is enough but a close-by lightning strike, which just jumped across thousands of feet from sky to utility pole, would not have any trouble jumping across the millimeter (or less) gap in the switch and still damage many compnents.
