At home, I run an external monitor and keyboard hooked to my HP Pavilion DV-1207. I
would like to fully close the HP's case , however, this puts the system into sleep
mode, which obviously I don't want. Is there a way to close the case when running
external monitor and keyboard without sleep mode?

On my machine the POWER SETTINGS in the control panel can be set not to
do anything when I close the lid. There should be a setting like that
in your HP.

If you are running XP change the setting under power options.

Be aware that heat generated by the CPU, disk drive etc., depending on the
design and model, can damage the LCD display. Having said that some models
are designed to operate this way (e.g. in a docking station).
