What`s the best upgrade?

Hi all,i am guessing this question has been asked a few times,so i am sorry for asking again. I am looking to upgrade my graphics cards.At the moment i have two 1gig 4870`s in CF. What AMD cards out at the moment would be classed as a step up from these two cards. Now i am not interested in the likes of a 6990,i am only running one monitor plus i have to have Vsync enabled as i get bad screen tear in all games i play and i dont really want to go way of Nvidia either. I was thinking of going back to one card as i have not really been impressed with the 4870`s in the CF set up,but reading on this site the newer cards are better in CF,so i am open to both,either single or CF. I think the only single GPU card from AMD that equals that setup is the 6970, which sits on the same tier as the 4870 X2 dual GPU card, according to the hierarchy chart here. Beyond that your options are nvidia cards, or dual GPU cards like the 5970 or the 6990.

Looks like i may as well hold on to the 4870`s for a while longer then.Thank you for the reply.
