DVD won't work? ? ?

I have a HP Pavilion ZE5375 laptop and have never tried to use the DVD drive
until today.

But when I put a standard DVD disc in the tray, it grinds and clanks and
eventually stops without recognizing the disc.

Nor can I copy a DVD disc that I have recorded from TV on my regular DVD
player.

I have installed the Sonic MyDVD program which came in a separate disc with
the laptop.

The drive has no trouble playing or recording regular CD-RW discs.
