I posted this question in, 'Microsoft Public.Windows XP', before I
realized where it would probably serve me better in this venue.
When I receive email attachments of photos from friends, (?), they are
all too oftem just a series of blank white squares with a thin black
border. In each square, one for each picture sent, there is a very
tiny square in the upper left hand corner and in that tiny square there
is a VERY small red square, a blue triangle and a blue circle. No
matter where I click...no picture!
Help? Accordeing to the sender, everybody else is successful in
opening the attachment. I ask...why not I?

Hi Mike...
Doubt that it really belongs here, either, but anyway
try right clicking on the symbol; then a pop up menu
should offer you several choices including viewing the
pic or saving it to your drive.

If you are using Outlook Express, you may have the security level set to a
high level. If so, IE gives you a message just below the "subject line"
telling you to click there if you want the attachments opened. It's for your
protection against viruses. You can set the security level in Tools/Options.
Hope this helps.

In recent windows versions, including XP, there is something called file
type association. That means that for every popular format of data
file, XP has registered a particular application program to open and
display that file. Frequently when you install a new program, it tends
to change that association to make itself the default program to open
that type of file.
It may be that your friend is using a very uncommon format type that no
software on your machine has been associated with that file type. If he
is using a common image format, say JPEG, and the problem still exists,
then somehow that file association has not been properly made on your
computer. Since Microsoft includes an imaging program, it is unlikely
that you have NO image display software on your machine.
What software do you use for your OWN digital photos? That is probably
the one that should be associated with all popular image file types.
You need to get an XP manual (try the library if you don't want to buy
one), and find out how to display and change the file association. Set
it to your normal photo editor/viewer.

Some binary newsgroups (mainly porn) encode binaries with yEnc - see
http://www.yenc.org/ to save on bandwidth meaning more binaries can be
posted. Your friend could be passing on yEnc encoded files.

you get very interesting results if you put this Posters name (axipolti )
into Google. I am not actually saying he is a Troll, because he does not
respond with abuse, but he does ask very many questions on all sorts of
Groups, and I would have expected such a proflific user to know the answere
to this question.
