Solution
I would suggest hitting a Sandybridge i5 2400k processor with 8gb of RAM, and something over a GTX 560. You should be able to find those, an HD 6950, a p67 motherboard, and a 700w psu for under $1200. If you look at the reviews about the 990x vs the i7 2600k, they're both very similar in performance despite core count. The i7 960 is a terrible price/performance chip, and that i5 will do more than what you need.
