Core i5 2500 - Performance Issue

I rendered a scene in 3ds max 2010 using vray 2.0. The scene was downloaded from cgdigest, a wet material tutorial. It rendered in 2m50s on my rig. My friend has a Core i3 530 2.93Ghz, DH55TC, Kingston 1333Mhz 6GB Ram, Evga GTX 550 1GB and on his rig the same scene rendered in 2m18s with all the same settings. I also tried the render at my university they have a Core i5 first generation, 4 GB of ram and no external GPU. It is one of those HP package systems, on it the render time was 1m40s.
I dont understand why its slow on my pc, could it be the motherboard?
