Dual channel memory query

Can anyone help please?
I have an old 2005 gigabyte Mb (8IG1000) which has 4 ram slots, And at the moment i've got 2x512mb sticks in my board, 1 in each channel which gives me dual channel.
My question is would i be gaining or losing memory in my system performance if i added 1 more 512mb? I know i would be losing the dual channel feature.
Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Dual channel gets you pretty much nothing. You would gain by adding the other stick, assuming it was equal with the others.

If you put in a stick significantly worse than the others, like if your current ones are 800 MHZ and you add a 533 MHZ, then it would be a large downgrade.

Assuming it is at least as good as the others, though, it would help.
