Whats the difference between the GTX 480 and 580?

What are the main differences between the Nvidia GTX 480 and GTX 580? They both use the Fermi architecture, but the GTX 580 is about 25% faster than the noisy, overheating, and power hungry GTX 480. The 580 also runs much cooler than the 480 card.

The GTX 580 is currently the fastest single GPU card money can buy. I wish I had gotten Two Palit 3GB GTX 580's and put them in SLI.

Whats the difference between 480 and 580?

The 480 has 480 shader cores. The 580 has 512 cores. The 580 is capable of FP16 processing in 1 clock cycle, like the GTX 460. The 480 does FP16 in 2 clock cycles. The GTX 580 (GF 110) also has more efficient transistors that allow for less heat to be generated at the same performance levels. Lastly, the GTX 580 has a new improved shroud, vapor chamber heatsink, and a reinforced fan with a more gradual ramp up profile. These factors all work together to make the GTX 580 one of the quietest reference designs available that is also very efficient at dealing with heat in single and SLI configurations.

So the GTX 580 is a highly improved GTX 480?

Essentially, though I am not sure I would say 'highly' as it is more the way NVidia wanted the 480 to have been. One thing matto left off was an improved memory controller that allows higher memory clocks (as the ram chips themselves weren't holding the card back). And the new transistors/maturing process allow for higher core/shader clocks too.

About how much faster is the 580 over the old 480? And how much more performance does the GTX 580 have over the old Radeon HD 5870?

Yes. Matto gave a good explanation. Also, you can see some decent performance increase with the 580:

The 580's around a 25-30% improvement over the "old 5870".

The 5870 is still a good relevant card comparable to the new cards...

For the most part, the 5870 kicks the crap out of the Radeon 68xx cards:

The 5870 even "hangs" with the 6950 2GB:

have you looked at the gigabyte gtx 480 super-overclock its basically on par with the 580 but has a better cooler and better components in my opinion and is alot cheaper were im from the 580 is at best £400 i just picked up a 480 soc for £230 im now thinking of getting a second for sli although i might be getting greedy lol! one maxes every thing out @1680x1050 except gta-iv will it every be playable:(

The performance is better and they seem to have made big improvements with the heat and noise control with that particular model.

That's a good deal too. You could get another (though it probably still won't help with GTA-IV), but you might want a little bit bigger monitor?
