Hello,

Hello,

I am building my first computer and am in need of public assistance. Some things to note: first, it will be used primarily for gaming; second, no over-clocking will be done; third don't worry about the optical drive; and forth, I am not trying to build the most expensive thing.

Here are the parts I have chosen.

Motherboard-- Crosshair IV Formula

What I would like from you: Are there certain products that are 'overkill' or need more of something and that you could suggest a different one? Is there a cheaper something that would work just as good if not better? Do these products fit nicely together?

I appreciate any and all feedback. Thank you so much.
P.S. current game: Starcraft 2

Why no overclocking? Some concept of purity? Someone told you it was dangerous?
Overclock! Get more for less!
Looks pretty good to me, except OVERCLOCK lol.
Oh, and also, how'd you choose that particular 460? It's overpriced for a non-overclocked-or-anything card. Check out:

Hey,
You won't need 8 GB of Ram. 4 will do if you feel like saving some money. No game uses that much memory and it will be wasted.
Don't get a Rosewell power supply. They are junk. One of them killed one of my PC's last year. Fried every component! Spend a couple of extra dollars and get a better brand like Corsair. If thats too much cash get a Ultra power supply. I have one and it's great and made well(and priced real cheap!)
Also get a Wester Digital Black drive instead. The price isn't much different than the blue and the performance is quite a bit better.
Happy gaming!

Gigabyte 790fx

Your MB is overkill, unless you intend to crossfire and even then a lesser MB will do, also if you do then you will need ATI and not Nvidia

My MB suggestions
ASUS M5A88-V EVO AM3+ AMD 880G HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard

My GPU suggestions
XFX HD-687A-ZDFC Radeon HD 6870 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card with Eyefinity

My PSU suggestion

I would only get the AMD chipset if you want to run the AMD Cards. For the sole reason that you can't SLI and the GTX460 is a reasonably weak card. I agree that a 6870 is a better way to go. Too expensive? Go for a 6850. Techpowerup! Launch review has the 6850 3% faster than the 460 and it's a little less too.
You can always crossfire a little ways down the road on the AMD chipset.

Mobo wise, the CHIV is awesome, I have one. You can just as easily get away with something a lot less expensive with most of the same features. The extra $150 could put you into an SSD or a 6950.

I would not buy a Rosewill PSU. I would endorse the Corsair recommended above. I've had good luck with Cooler Master, OCZ and Antec. If you think you might Crossfire an AMD card, go for 600+ W. $5 more and you get a modular OCZ unit.

Consider the Antec 300 for your case. The build quality is quite a bit better, and if you get the Illusion you'll end up with a lot more cooling capacity.

Good luck!

what resolution will you be gaming at? I'm at 1280x1024 and i can play starcraft 2 on ultra with 4850 1gb. you probably wouldn't need any more than a 5770. I'd go for the 6850 just to be safe though. The motherboard is defeinetly overkill. you really don't have to spend anymore than like 70-100$ on a basic gaming motherboard. and of course you don't need 8gb of ram but its so cheap these days. why the hell not =D

first off i would forget the phenom and get a MSI P67A-G43 (B3) LGA 1155 Intel P67 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX $96 and will give sli and has the bonus of supporting much faster memory DDR3 1066/1333/1600*/1866*/2133*
and a i5 2400 $210 and im still 10 usd under what your phenom and board would cost.

*means. when oc'd
also why get a 500 gig hdd when you can get a 1 tb 1 for the same price.
hdd Western Digital Caviar Blue WD10EALX 1TB 7200 RPM SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive $60 and your still under your budget by a tenner.

this way your gonna get close to and in some cases better than i7 950 performance which is about 25% more than your phenom 2 and do it for less money... ;)

LOL at the Crosshair + BE and No overclocking. Seriously.

By all means get a i5 2400 and a H67 for that money. Also go for a HD6870 for $200.

As pointed out you just dont need that crosshair mb

Uther39's suggestion is probably the way to go
Asus M5A88-V EVO AM3+ AMD 880G HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6813131733

Its possible to upgrade the cpu in coming years to the next AMD platform and you save a bucket of cash .

Id rather have 4 gig of RAM and spend the extra on a gfx card

Ignore irrelevant benchmarks like the one above . The Phenom with the revised motherboard will do everything you need and do it at a better price
