wanting to upgrade mobo to support i5 cpu but want to keep my original case. do i need the micro-atx or full size? Have heard that full size will not fit.

Solution
Most oem cases by hp take only micro atx boards. But you may need a new windows coa, since the original windows installation only works with hp boards. You may also need a stronger power supply unless you use onboard video. Hp cases often only have 250w ps; I recommend antec, ocz, or corsair ps. The rating depends on your total system load. 500w is usually enough for one video card.
