Can you join CF and SLI?

this guy i know said he has gtx 580's and 5970's or something and he has them on cross fire sli where he can use them all together. Is this really possible or is he bluffing?

also is it possible to have two gtx 580's in sli, and two 5790's in CF, and then join the sli and CF to create OMGWTFBBQHOLYCR...

If your board has a Hydra chipset then yes, kind of. In Hydra mode you would use neither SLI or crossfire. Instead each recognized GPU does part of the work and the output is sent to one GPU. I'm sure though that some configurations would be less efficient than others and it's a pretty mixed bag as far as game support.
