I added a new HDD to my homebuilt system and installed Windows XP on it. Now i am getting some strange results, when i first start up the computer i get a long single beep and it refuses to start. If i then shut it down and take the Sata lead out and reinsert it the computer starts with no problem and then runs fine all the time it is on. There are no obvious problems apart from windows update being broken.

Anybody any idea what the problem is?

The first thing that you should suspect is that the power supply is either faulty or under powered. Substitution of the power supply is the only reliable test.
