The linitations of x86 chips is the amount of ram you can you use in your system. compared to a 64 bit arch, chip. there really are no limitations to speak of. when it comes to software problems there really isnt any more than you would have with a 64 bit system , every system has glitches and bugs , it doesnt matter if it is x86 or x64 bit. I need more info to be more specific. thanks.

the x86 instruction set has not changed so older software will still run fine on new x86 processors. Your problem would be in finding drivers for the various 'chips' the newer motherboard would have to get it to work with the older software in question.

Another issue you may have is some real old software may actually run too fast on a modern chip and wind up with timing related issues. This is not a hardware issue but a programming issue.
