Is there a fanless alternative to my 8800GTS ?

My 2+ years old Nvidia 8800 GTS, can be better utilised in an upcoming Hackintosh build I have planned.

I was wondering, if I don't require any more performance than the 8800GTS can offer (perhaps slightly less even), is there a modern alternative (ATI or NVidia) that consumes less power, perhaps even fanless and silent ?

I'd be really greatful if you guys can point me to a modern equivalent that meets this criteria. My Windows needs are quite simple, I use a lot of Photoshop, Dreamweaver and Android development. Don't play any PC games (I have Xbox360 for that)

Thanks in advance

Dax

The modern equivalent of the 8800GTS is the HD 5750 and GTX 260 or 9800GT. It's competition was the HD 4850 I think.

The GTX 260 and 9800GT seems to be phasing out. There does not appear to be any fanless version at this time anyway. There was the Gigabyte 9800GT Silent Cell fanless card, but you need to Google around for it. There are two fanless HD 5750s:

PowerColor SCS3 AX5750 - $100 after rebate

GIGABYTE Silent Series GV-R575SL-1GI - $130

In terms of power consumption, the 8800 GTS uses about 100w under typical gaming conditions. The 9800GT uses around 89w and the HD 5750 is about 59w.

jaguarskx, thank you SO much for taking the time to answer. That was exactly the kind of response I was looking for. I'll check out those links and order one next week for my Hackintosh.

thanks

because I don't need gaming performance, I checked out above suggestion of HD5770, but think I may actually get away with the fanless HD5570, which is what you were saying also.

Many thanks

i used to have an 88gt. from sparkle. it was called the cool pipe 3.
it was a fanless heatsync and was designed to be used as such.
although i did eventually mount a fan on it which dropped temps dramatically, it did work well but needs a very well ventilated case.

the operating temp of the card was close to 100 degrees when there was no fan on it and 57 with a fan.
the throttle temp was 110'c but it never quite got there. nor would i recommend running any card at that temp any way...
what im saying is basically yes you can find fan free solutions but you would be better off investing in a silet fan to go with it.

the radiator is just under my cpu cooler.

and in this pic you can see the fan i jerry rigged for it.

Thanks nforce4max

"bake" ? Hmm, perhaps I've underestimated how much cooling these fanless designs require.

I use an Antec P180 case which offers decent ventilation. I use a Vertex2 for my OS, so it's not as if I have anything boiling away in there. Case ambient temps are relatively low. My GeForce 8800GTS hardly ever throttles up (once a week)

I plan to remove the GeForce and use it in a Hackintosh. Replace the GeForce with a modern equivalent 40nm card that does a similar job (possibly HD5570). I'm hoping 40nm will offer more efficient cooling and power consumption.

100degrees ?!? Woah, I wasn't expecting that. As you say, perhaps I'd be better off with a HD5570 that has conventional fan cooling onboard. Is there much difference in the quality/silence of the fans, different manufacturers fit ? Who are the better brands to look out for ? Gigabyte ? Sapphire ?

Ok, will do.

Thanks again.
