Mixing ram

im pretty sure i know the answer but im going to ask anyway.

is it alright to mix ram brands and speeds as long as the newer ram is rated below speed wise then what you already have so that you can set the older ram to the new ram speed. the reason i ask is that i need to add more memory and its hard to find the same speed ram in 8gb modules locally and i want to avoid ordering as i need it yesterday.

It's not necessarily about mixing brands of ram, it's more of the specifications that have to match, such as voltage, memory type, latency, etc.
