Just built a pc for the first time. Pretty newb when it comes to it. Specs are as follows:

Intel i5-2500K
Gigabyte GA-P67A-UD3-B3
Corsair CMPSU-650HX 650W Modular PSU

I don't know if it's just me, but the HD 6950 fan seems louder than I'd expected. At 33% fan speed, 4800 RPM, it's noisy enough nevermind at full. I'm doing much with it and even at about 50 C. When it's at idle, it's fine and quiet.

Just wondering if anyone has any input on that...

The stock fan can be quite loud under load, especially if it's overclocked or flashed...like mine he he;).
Rivatuner will allow you to change the fan speeds but lower speeds will obviously result in higher temperatures.
An aftermarket heatsink will do the job but will almost certainly invalidate the warranty and while it's a monster the Zalman VF3000A is superbly quiet and keeps things very, very cool (mine never goes over the 25% minimum).
Try GPUZ as well, it's a very useful little app and free.

Wtf you have a 6950 and don't know what flash is

If you have the reference 2GB version you can turn your 6950 into a 6970 simply by flashing the bios.

AMD was too lazy to make another card and made the 6950 and the 6970 pretty much the same. There are 1536 shaders on both GPUs, however, the 6950 has over 100 of them locked by the stocked bios. 6950 has 1408 usable shaders and flashing unlocks the shaders :D.

Well try having your fan speed spin at 2400 RPMs constantly. Idk why your fan spins so fast but 2400 RPMS is 50% for me and I never hit 70 degrees or higher when gaming.

Haha...yeah. I did say I was pretty noob when it came to the stuff. Still picking up things here and there.

Here's another noob question...how do you set your RPM? I can adjust fan speed through Catalyst Control, but somehow even when I set it to a certain %speed the RPM is still high, I think.

Have you tried different drivers?

11.1/11.2/11.3?

Maybe that might be the problem? My fan spins at 5000 RPM at 80%. There's no reason why yours should spin 5000 RPM at 35%

You didn't install the drivers that came on your cd with the video card did you?

I've always downloaded from AMD website because many people have said they've had problems with installing from CD.

I don't know the extent of the truth but since downloading from the website works for me I never use the CD.

Well reverting didn't help. I'm beginning to wonder if this is just what it's like for the HD 6950. It's under warranty...maybe I'll just replace it and see if I just have a flawed fan
