OK then. I currently have dual HIS Radeon HD4670 1GB cards running in Crossfire mode. They work pretty good but I am thinking about upgrading. At what level of ATI/AMD graphics cards would I have to go to, in order to have better performance from one card?

Keep in mind that the current setup runs in software crossfire only.

I would also be interested in finding out which Nvidia cards would offer better performance. I can only afford one card and am looking for a marked improvement. I would also like to stay under $200.00.

So, what do you all think would be the best course of action?

for radeons it will be 6850 or 6870. for nvdia cards GTX460. 6850 are comparable to GTX460. 6870 normally price around 200+ but if you take the MIR it will fit your budget.

for the GTX460 try to avoid the one with 768MB of RAM or the SE edition. but if you play on small resolution GTX460 768MB still fine (1600x900 and below). other than that just make sure your PSU able to handle these cards
