HD6990 in a 1.1 PCIe slot?

Hi all!

I´ve got a Asus P5K Pro motherboard.
With a Core 2 Duo E8400 @ stock (3ghz)
8GB RAM (800mhz)

The motherboard has a 1.1 PCIe port.
If I put a HD6990, can I use the full potential of the card without the slot being the bottleneck?

I don´t think the CPU and RAM will bottle to much, just take a look at this test. They are testing a HD6850 and a HD6950 with same CPU and similar motherboard and no bottlenecking.

Thanx!

Why would you buy a $700 graphics card to go with $300 system anyway? That cpu will almost certainly bottleneck a 6990 so you should either upgrade the rest of your system first or go with a less powerful/expensive card.

Some people have report problems with a PCI-e 2.1 card in a PCI-e 1.x slot.

Will that happen to you? I don't know, but if are going to buy the HD 6990, then I guess you'll find out for yourself.

I think you need to OC your CPU to around 3.5GHz to eliminate or dramatically reduce potential bottleneck issues. Can the E8400 be OC'ed that high? I don't know for certain.

A C2D @ 3GHz isn't that good. It's fine for many games, but some will have lots of issues. To pair a 6990 with it is not a good idea. I'd also only buy a 6990 if you are running AT LEAST 5040x1050, if not 5760x1080. If you are playing at 1920x1080, drop the 6990 idea and just get a 6970. Spend the money saved on a new board and CPU.

Its not the card its the mobo manufacturer straying from the given standard. There's nothing special related to power between 1 and 2.1. Just bandwidth, efficiency and latency.

Doesn't matter. End result is it won't work. Doesn't matter if its the fault of the card, board, or bad karma.

Thank you all for the answers! Really appreciate it!

The reason I wonder about this,
is simply be course I know my hardware is old. It´s doing it´s work wonderful in Windows environment
but the games are getting a bit like slides. (HD3870+HD3850 in CF)

The main question is, can I put a HD6990 and maybe lose 10% of the cards capacity then it´s fine by me.
A little "Artificial respiration" of the whole system so to speak.
And later I will upgrade the motherboard, CPU and RAM.

But if I lose more than 30% of the cards capacity it´s as you guys say, it´s no use.
The resolution is 1920x1080.

Thanks in advance!

Its going to depend on the game ofcourse. I would think with such a system, 30% loss at least would be expected. I seriously doubt you see any difference between a 6950, 6970, and 6990.

Thanks in advace!

EDIT: Please no guesses. :)
