Wait for HD 7000 series?

I'm a click away from buying a Gigabyte HD 6850 that comes with the $20 MIR and Shogun 2...

Should I hold out for the new 28nm HD 7000's? Will it be worth the wait?

I don't need a new card right away but I also don't want to wait around for years any longer. I am running a 4650 1 gb, I know, long story short I bought the 4650 to hold me over until ATI released the 5850 a couple years back but I never got around to it.

i5 750 stock
P55m-ud4
hyper 212
ocz intel xtreme 1600 1.65v(I know, I bought outdated RAM at the time)
corsair tx750
diamond(terrible brand) HD 4650

All I really play is Left 4 Dead 2, Counter Strike Source, MNC, and Race 07. I will probably give Battlefield 3 a go when it is released though.

1920 x 1200 T260HD(Why on Earth did they stop making this thing? All it needs is an update: slim down and 120hz refresh rate.)

Thanks

Thanks for the responses, I appreciate them.

As for the 6970, I don't think I will shell out that much money. If anything I will wait for the 6950's to drop around $200 because that is the most I will spend.

And the 5850, well I've looked at the benchmarks and it is faster than the 6850 but it is also older, louder, and more power hungry.

I'd really like the 6950 but I just don't feel it is a good idea to shell out $250 for a video card and with the supposed imminent release of the 7000 series I'm leaning towards waiting due to potential price drops and/or performance boosts.

Does anyone have information on these new cards? I've scoured google but to no avail.

I would get a 6950 2 gig or gtx 570 it is worlds of difference from what you have, when the 7000 series finally comes along with Nv's offerings then sell what you buy and upgrade, better off having something good to game with bc there is no release dates set in stone my friend

Well, the 6950 1gb is out of the question so the 2gb is way out. Like I said at this point in time I cannot justify spending $200+ on a video card. However, I think I may take you up on your second piece of advice and just grab the 6850 in the meantime.

A 6850 is more than enough for those games.Even a 5770 would be plenty. As for BF 3 I believe going with one of the 68xx series would be better than the 5850.5850 is better in raw power but the 68xx series are much better at DX11 which i'm pretty sure BF 3 will have. You will see higher fps with a 6850 than a 5850 in DX11.
I would get a 6850 now and then crossfire if you find it slowing down when BF 3 comes out.You might also want to consider O.C.ing your CPU,you will see a large improvement.

Well, I bought the Gigabyte 6850 OC Edition(Not too happy about the OC Edition but I don't think the sell the original anymore.) Sadly the rebate will pay the tax but I will be selling the Shogun 2 Steam code which should bring the total down to $150.

Thanks for the replies.

A 6850 is a nice card but the turn off is the crappy drivers. A GTX 460 is also a nice card but the crappy manufacturing quality of most card is a huge let down. Just revived my ancient 8800gtx after over a year since I last used it :)

EDIT: Just read the last posts, ughh wtb new brain. Gigabyte is nice but not all that great. Their coolers are crap, I would know after buying one of the gtx 460s and literally having a fan fall off  oh well fan mod coming right up.

I would keep the 6850.6850 in crossfire is a really powerful combo. And yes it does really depend on the game i guess.Looked up a reeview and in Metro2033 the 460 sli beat the 6850 crossfire by 20 fps.But in AvP the 6850 crossfire beat the 460 sli by 30fps.Really depends on which game you play.

I just hate the name of the 6790....too much like the 6970 and it seems to be terrible in terms of value when compared to the 6850 or 5770. Two power connectors, its loud and long, the list goes on.

I'm hoping I don't receive my card DOA then I'm sure that I'll be happy.

yeah for that matter it is a huge fail, less powerful then a 6850 but requires more power, terrible for me the it goes--- 5670--5770-- and then I jump right to the 6850/gtx460 segment as it seems those in betweeners such as the 550ti adn 6970 are not worth it imo...

+1

Yea, even the physical quality of moderns cards sucks these days. Drop dead gtx 460, self detonating gtx 590, Russian Roulette gtx 570. Green screen, gray screen of death. The madness never ends. :pt1cable:

4 year old busted up and smashed 8800gtx that I got off ebay two years ago for $32 still runs. Even after three new caps and not being used since 2009 booted up today without a hitch.
