hi i recently upgrade from a 4870hd 1gb to a sapphire 6850 hd 1gb..

i upgrade mainly to work on 3d studio max, without having to spend on a workstation card..

the thing is, the was a very little diference ( 1 or 2 frames more ) in the performance at modeling..

do you have any suggestions to improve the frame rates in 3ds max?

do you recommned geting a Workstation card? wichone? (not to expensive please)

tnx.

What kind of fps do you get in 3D studio max and what is your current CPU? You could be CPU bottlenecked. The 6850 has features the 4870 didn't like DX11, 3D compatibility, etc. but it isn't that powerful. If you want something much more powerful, get a 5870 or 6950. Even the 5850 or 6870 would be a big bump.

The Radeon number scheme between the 5000/6000 series is a bit confusing. Think of the 6800 series as a 6700 series performance wise. So you went from the top of the line 4000 series to midrange 6000 series.

i acctualy love to know how to @)#$( choose a workstation card.. i dont want to spend a lot of money for just a few more Frames in 3ds max...

for example.. i made this scene with 2 500 000 polygons, and the 4870 gave me like 4 frames per second..

the 6850 only 5 maybe 6 frames..

how many frames could i spect from a workstation card, that cost around the same price or maybe around 300.. ??

Oh wow! That's a huge boost! That's way bigger than I'd expect. I had expected you went from 30fps to 32fps. 4fps to 6fps is a 50% boost! That's pretty good. But not very pretty to look at.

Sorry, I was really hoping someone would chime in with knowledge about workstation graphics. I know gaming cards and their comparative performance. But I don't know how a workstation card would render that.

Hey from 4fps to 6fps is a 50% improvement !!! Anyway, your big limit on programs like that is generally the CPU. Anyway you might want to try softmodding your 4870 to a FirePro V8700. I don't know about softmodding the 6850 since I'm not aware of any FirePro equivalent.
