How to check motherboard works

Hello,
i got given a Gigabyte GA-EP45-DS3P motherboard and i dont want to buy a proccesor without knowing if the motherboard works is there anyway of knowing this? or will i just have to take a gamble?

Putting a CPU in is the only way, unfortunately.
