Compulsory SLI?

Ok so I am looking at building a new computer.
I want to use 2 nvidia cards everybody I ask said they are better, but the motherboard I had recommended has crossfire. I don't Know if this is a problem because I don't want to do sli. I want to use "Soft TH" for 3 screens and "CUDA" to use the other gpu (the second cards gpu). please tell me if I can use 2 nvidia cards without using sli, or if I can even use 2 nvidia cards on a motherboard with crossfire.

also I have a nvidia GeForce 9600 GT card that I want to keep using (maybe as the second card)

Software hack takes care of the board requirement just so long that it supports crossfire. It basically fools the driver into thinking that it is on a sli certified board. A second 9600gt isn't going to be easy to find though.
