first of all i have to say that this is my first post/question , i hope that i will debate more often in the future.
I need to ask u guys what to buy, laptop or desktop cos in my country(Serbia) prices has become pretty similar .
My last year lap top went to hell by accident and i have been using company lap top (lenovo g550 T3500 celeron integrated graphic 2gb of ram) since. Now i have decided to buy myself a new one . I have to choose between :
1. Desktop : i5 2500k (price 200e), GigabyteGA-H67MA-UD2H-B3 or similar(price 100e), chiftec middle class power supply (65e), kingston 2x2gb @1600(45e) , gpu nvidia gts 250 (refurbished around 70e ) , hard disk 1 tb (40e) and used 19 inch monitor (40e) .
When my friend and I calculated this it went around 580 euros roughly , plan is to buy better gpu in future .
2 Laptop :
Inspiron N5110 Core i7 -2630QM 2.0GHz 6GB DDR3/640GB 15,6" HD WLED, DVD-RW Wlan+BT, GeForce GT 525 1GB, 1.0 MpWcam , Numeric keyd ,6 cell, HDMI,7-in-1, Black Switch Cover

This laptop costs around 620 euro.
There is an third option and that is to instead I5 buy AMD Phenom X4 955 black edition (around 110 e) and in that case mother board will be cheaper so it will cost around 70e . That gives me save from 110 to 140 euro so complete config will cost around 460 e.
In case that i choose laptop i would probably return lenovo to my company, on the other hand if i buy desktop i am free to keep it until i work for them so U can say that i already posses notebook computer.
Real problem is what i do with my computers. I do social network marketing and that includes lots of tabs (around 30) , i do a little design, html and css, little video editing, lots of photo editing and uploading on the web. Here are some programs: adobe photoshop, ilustrator, premiere, all kinds of video converters . I do not use dot net , java and csharp. I also dont do 3d modelling (3d studio, Arhicad etc) . This things i do at work and this lenovo g550 can handle it but not quite good. At home i would like to play some SC2, Mass effect 1,2 ,3 ... and that kind of games and that this notebook cant handle . Also i can bring some of my work at home and do it there.
At this moment i cant decide what path to choose because of similar prices, if i have had monitor i would go for desktop but i have laptops since 2005 and all my monitors are long gone. This is comparison
1 i5 desktop nvidia gts 250 / 580 euro
2 i7 laptop nvidia 525m / 620 euro
3 phenom desktop nvidia gts 250 / 460 euro
And the fact that i will return company's notebook if i buy myself an laptop, new one would do all the work i need, at home and at work.
Well i have always recommended, and probably always will, a desktop. Think of it this way, you can build the desktop yourself like you're planning and you can also fix it yourself, upgrade it and troubleshoot it. Those options are nearly gone when you get a laptop, plus with a laptop you can't just get a bigger display or completely change the architecture etc. So in my opinion the best option would be to get the desktop with the Phenom X4. if it's possible and not much more try for a Phenom six core. Much faster than an i5 and much cheaper and cooler running.
exactly, now figure in price and AMD wins right away.
On price, but not performance. That's what they're debating.
Back to the original post - I'd stick with a desktop if you're not moving around that often. If you've been doing most of your work on an integrated graphics chip on a laptop, I would go with an i5-2400 + H67/Z68 board for the integrated GPU. That way you can get a better power supply (Chieftec isn't a great brand), and then as you said upgrade the GPU in the future.
If you do decide to go AMD, I would spend the difference in price on a better GPU, since you'll need it for games and work.
