Network Extender

I have a linksys dual band wireless N router, and I recently bought a netgear network extender with the intention of connecting a basement computer, xbox 360 and home theater reciever to the netgear extender and then wirelessly to the linksys router. However, when the extender is powered on the xbox, reciever, and computer are networked together but the linksys router puts out a very slow internet connection and the netgear extender does not receive signal from the router. Are there any steps i can take to troubleshoot this problem? Neither linksys nor netgear will help me since i am using two different products.

Where is the router in reference to the extender?

Are the SSID and the Security Phrase the same on both?

Did you configure the extender while near the router to make sure you get a signal?
