Is the audio slot for speakers faulty?

i have a P8H61-M LE/USB3 motherboard, and when i put the green jack in the back of the computer no sound comes form the speakers. everything is up to date even the drivers. even when I plug them in the front, still there is no sound. what is the problem

Right click the volume icon and verify is the sound is being output to the sound card. Might be that your default device is the HDMI of the video card or some other component.

Check sound properties and make sure the sound card or onboard chip is default playback device.
Many times drivers set the video card /hdmi as default sound device.

i dont have a sound card but onboard audio. my mobo is P8H61-M LE/USB3

It's still a sound card but the point is Windows (if your running windows) might not be sending the sound to the onbaord sound card
