You're doing it wrong. :p

Pick a better GPU. At this budget, it will affect your performance more than the CPU. You can cut down the budget on the mobo and PSU.

Check this build.

It's got a X3 and HD5770. Since it includes a $40 case, you can include a X4 955 within budget.

The AM3+ mobo is geared for a future upgrade, but is low on features. If you dont plan on a upgrade in the near future, get one of these instead.

Hi. I just read that MSI doesn't treat AMD boards with a whole lot of quality compared to it's Intel line so you may want to revisit that motherboard choice. I don't trust Raidmax budget line of psu's. Antec, Seasonic, and Corsair are more reputable. I was trying to find a way to upgrade the gpu too. I found this build in the budget AMD sticky, you might want to take a look at it. it's pretty solid and it seems workable for you. You could keep the Phenom, i believe this ram has better latency, a much better graphics card and psu. Hope this helped.

you will notice none or very low performance degradation going from a phenom ii x4 (quad core) to a anthlon ii x3 (three cores and without l2 cache)
most of the games out there depend more on gpu so try to save on that cpu
so you can push a little bit of juice out of that cpu

Best solution

i dont have a .edu email or know anyone that does so windows 7 is still going to kill my budget at +$100, in not really worrying about the GPU because its going to be upgraded in the future (i just got the best budget card i could find that will still give me 35+ FPS on crysis 2 i can deal with that)

does anyone know of a good power supply 500w+ that is the same price as the $40 raidmax?

the current rig at your budget will ruin performance, heres a better deal.
