Hey guys,

Need help understanding what is going wrong with my new-build.

The specs are:

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-M68M-S2P SKT AM2/3

RAM: 2G Micron DDR2 6400(800) MEM

HDD: 2TB WD SATA2 WD20EARS 5400RPM

Case + PSU: CiT S003B Black Case 300w PSU

GPU: ASUS HD 5450 (ATI Radeon) ((connected through hdmi to my TV))
http://www.scan.co.uk/products/1gb-asus-hd5450-silent-pci-e-21-(x16)-800mhz-gddr3-gpu-650mhz-80-cores-d-sub-dvi-i-hdmi

CPU: AMD Athron II X2 2.9 GHz 45w

Anything obvious I missed there?

The symptoms:
I connect external CD-drive via USB, put OS disk in. Standard POST screen, "booting off CD" message, and system either (a) stops responding (b) in case of windows 7, when it pre-loads files (the "white-bar"), throws an IO error.

My thinking is that preloading files for windows and other installation writes to RAM, that's the only IO error I can think of (HDD's brand new, not formatted). Am I wrong?

What I tried:
(1) Removing graphics (running through VGA cable) -- no effect
(2) Removing one RAM module (in addition to the graphics) -- managed to get into Ubuntu's memtest, ran okay for one and the other separately, then I plugged in both of them -- and it did load the memtest and ran without errors. Note that it didn't work previously, when i just removed the GPU. Plugged GPU back in -- Ubuntu doesn't load, windows throws IO err again.
(3) Kicking the case a little bit.
(4) Brief check on newegg for power usage, maximum was 220-ish with high-end mobo (which mine isn't).
(5) Using the External USB CD-drive on a laptop to boot Ubuntu, Windows 7 and Xp -- worked.

What you guys think?

I asked around in one of the electronics shops, and the guy (who was described as computer geek), said there is potentially an issue with using ATI graphics with mobo's nvidia chipset, though i couldn't find any definitive answers on google.

I'll be trying to get the windows install onto a memory stick (been meaning to do that anyway), and see if that works.

And perhaps trying different combinations of components removed as well... Any other suggestions will be hugely appreciated.

Cheers,
Danny
