My Dell 5150 notebook will no longer boot up, and there is data on the
drive that I need. I figured I might be able to just remove the drive
and put it into my Dell 8200 notebook to read it, but maybe it's not
that easy. When I tried that the 8200 would start, but displayed only
a blank screen. No bootup sequence. Any ideas?

A point of clarification: I don't believe the drive is at fault for the
5150 not starting up. When I push the power button on the 5150, it
comes on for just a half second and immediately shuts off. I tried
various things to get it to start, including removing the battery,
memory, and hard drive, but always the same result: no power up. So I
figure the drive could still be good since it doesn't seem to point to
the 5150's power up issue.

If you were trying to use it as a boot drive, that path leads not to
success. If the machine can handle two drives and you have the
adapter you need, it might work. Otherwise go buy yourself a 2.5 ide
usb case and put the old drive in that.
