Hi i am looking at getting a Asus M5A78L-M/USB3 mobo and an amd fx cpu.

In the mobo blurb it says

* AMD FX Series CPU on this motherboard supports up to DDR3 1866MHz as its standard memory frequency.

4 x DIMM, Max. 16GB, DDR3 2000(O.C.)/1866(O.C.)/1800(O.C.)/1600(O.C.)/1333/1066 Hz ECC, Non-ECC, Un-buffered Memory
Dual Channel Memory Architecture

can i use Corsair 8GB DDR3 1600Mhz ram on this board with an amd fx cpu or do i have to use 1866mhz

I would suggest using RAM with the part number CT2KIT51264BA1339 like I have in my signature.

However, the Corsair will probably work.

You absolutely don't need 1866 RAM. If you look at those numbers you showed, the highest one without (O.C.) written next to it says 1333 and that is what I would suggest you use.

The one I suggested is probably the best one at that speed and worth getting over other types.

Over Clock, basically to force the hardware to do what it is not supposed to be able to do. Usually it involves some manual configuration, often very much of it. It also often involves some system instability and frustration.

If you aren't familiar with it, its best to just pretend like any number with (O.C.) just isn't written there.
