I'm attempting to "split" a single cable jack in order to have TV signal and hook into my cable modem for internet. When I attempted this I did not internet connectivity. When I moved the modem to another outlet everything was fine. Will a splitter work for this? Do I need to do something special?

Yes, a splitter should work for this application. The internet and TV signal operate on different channels and therefore can share the same common feed. You may need a powered splitter though because of the reduction in signal that splitters inherently cause. These aren't too expensive though in my experience.
