Hi,

I am looking to build or buy a budget photo editing machine for my Dad. Hopefully will spend no more than ~500, but can if necessary. He takes a lot of pictures so I will be getting two 1.5-2 tb hard drives in raid 1. Right now he is planning to use photoshop elements, but may evolve as he progresses. Any suggestions? How much ram is neccessary? Is photo editing more processor dependent or graphics card? Thanks for your help.

Photo editing will be primiary CPU and RAM. If you're going to run RAID1, go with 7200k drives. Hitachi has 1.5TB 7200rpm drives for $65 each. If its in your budget go for the WD Blacks, they're a little bit more. You'll want a decent video card but you don't need anything crazy if he's not going to be gaming. Probably the most important thing for video editing is a really good monitor with accurate colors.

actually there is nothing wrong with using slower big drives in raid 1, its just redundant storage. these work well in Raid 1 or 5:

Seagate Barracuda Green ST1500DL003 1.5TB 5900RM 64mb cache $65 (the 64mb cache makes this a fast drive for the speed)

4GB under win7/64 should be fine for him. if you can get 8Gb on sale go for it
as for a GPU a GTS 430/450 or HD 5750/5770 is what I would go with.
CPU you definitely want a quad core for rendering. a i5-2400 would be my choice or and AMD Phenom II X4 955.
you will want a small fast HDD for the OS and system software (boot Drive)

this is just a quick response, I will see about working up a system for you when I get some more time.

do you/he have any reusable parts (case, PSU, SATA DVD/CD, monitor, etc)? OS?

are you near a Microcenter and which one?

Just saying the 7200s are the exact same price and size, spindle speed isn't the only component of driver performance but it definitely is A component of drive performance. This becomes a lot of less important to your point if he has a seperate highspped boot volume, but if he's on a budget, thats not where I could put my money. I'd rather invest it in the monitor if I'm doing photo editing.
