Help/Advice upgrading CPU

I was wondering if my Motherboard: ASUS M3N72-D AM2+/AM2 NVIDIA nForce 750a SLI HDMI ATX AMD Motherboard

would allow for a CPU upgrade from my AMD Phenom II X3 720 2.80ghz to something newer like; (AMD Phenom II X4 980 Black Edition Deneb 3.7GHz 4 x 512KB L2 Cache 6MB L3 Cache Socket AM3 125W Quad-Core Desktop Processor). If not any suggestions.

I use my PC mainly for gaming, and I wanted to update my CPU since many newer games seem to want a quad-core at least for recommended settings.

edit: I don't OC at all, and I play games at 1680x1050, GPU is a 560Ti, I have 4GB DDR2 RAM, and Windows 7 64 bit Home Premium.

AM3 processors work on AM2+ motherboards due to the presence of both the DDR2 and DDR3 memory controllers on the processor
AM2+ processors do not work on AM3 motherboards due to the processor's lack of a DDR3 memory controller

You have an AM2+ MB, and the Phenom II X4 is an AM3 CPU, it will work. You will probably have to update the BIOS to the newest version if you haven't already.

Update to the latest BIOS before you upgrade the CPU.
