I was wondering if my Motherboard: ASUS M3N72-D AM2+/AM2 NVIDIA nForce 750a SLI HDMI ATX AMD Motherboard http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131323

would allow for a CPU upgrade from my AMD Phenom II X3 720 2.80ghz to something newer like;

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103934 (AMD Phenom II X4 980 Black Edition Deneb 3.7GHz 4 x 512KB L2 Cache 6MB L3 Cache Socket AM3 125W Quad-Core Desktop Processor). If not any suggestions.

I use my PC mainly for gaming, and I wanted to update my CPU since many newer games seem to want a quad-core at least for recommended settings.

edit: I don't OC at all, and I play games at 1680x1050, GPU is a 560Ti, I have 4GB DDR2 RAM, and Windows 7 64 bit Home Premium.

AM3 processors work on AM2+ motherboards due to the presence of both the DDR2 and DDR3 memory controllers on the processor
AM2+ processors do not work on AM3 motherboards due to the processor's lack of a DDR3 memory controller

You have an AM2+ MB, and the Phenom II X4 is an AM3 CPU, it will work. You will probably have to update the BIOS to the newest version if you haven't already.
