Is a GTX 460 768MB to a 6870 1GB a worthy upgrade, for one cliffs of dover recommends 1GB of video ram and it seems to struggle with the 460 at 1400 x 900. I can buy the 6870 for £140 i was going to sell the 460 with my AMD ATHLON II 255, 4GB of OCZ platinum and BIOSTAR MCP6P3 with an origianal VISTA licence all surplus to requirements with no case to cover costs. I brought the 460 last October rather than the 6850 but now ive seen the 6870 its tempting.

You probably won't see a mind blowing difference, but the 6870 does outperform the GTX460 768MB in most cases by a small to moderate amount. In a few cases it seems to have a good bit of increase. If you are selling the 460 with an old system and upgrading a current system it may be a good move. However, if you are going to loose out from selling the 460 to upgrade to the 6870, it may not be totally worth it. It is sort of your call. It will give you better performance though. You may want to research that particular game and see if there are any card review that include it. But generally speaking the 6870 is an upgrade.

The card I was originally looking at the time was the ati 6850, I was put off because of driver criticism so i went for the 460 768mb because the price was right. If I had spent the little extra and brought the 1GB version I think it would have been ideal choice. I made a similar choice a short time ago with the XFX 8800GS 384MB and i found this to be a great card until the fan packed up. I have read on forums that other users are struggling with this flight sim. The 460 plays CRYSIS 2 great might be time to learn to tweek the card.

I'd try your hand at overclocking it a little bit. The 460's do pretty well.

The GTX 460 768mb really shouldn't have any problems with a resolution of 1400x900. More memory tends to help more at high resolutions but even at 1920x1200 the 1gb card is on average less than 10% faster.
Overclocking the card is a good idea like jay suggests. They can often get up to a 30% increase over reference speeds. Overclocking is pretty easy also. I recommend Afterburner;

yeah, 768MB 460 OCs really good, so you should try it, it'd give you around 15% boost, but 6870 is only worth it if you can sell the 460 good, probably it'll be bottlenecked by your CPU, but it's over 25% better...

My main cpu is a phenom II 955 which i havent overclocked yet Black edition. I built the athlon II just for tinkering with im going to sell it and thinking of putting the 460 in to it. I dont use it, it should make a good selling point with vista home premium installed on a 160GB hard drive.

You will see a performance difference between the two cards for sure, not a huge one. You might be able to snag a HD 5870 for a good deal.

yeah Phenom II 955 won't bottleneck anything, so 6870 would give you about 25% more performance than 768MB 460
