can a laptop run ddr3 and gddr5 at the same time?

Hello, so I Own a laptop and here is a screenshot of my memory specs:

I have two ddr3 memory chips with 4gb and 2gb

So, ive been wanting to improve my graphics performance, and found out that my graphics card (mobility radeon hd 5850) can run gddr5 memory, so ive been thinking can a laptop run ddr3 and gddr5 at the same time? I dont want to ruin my computer, so i better ask some questions, and the cpu is i7 740qm :D

More about laptop ddr3 gddr5 time
  1. RAM is DDR3. Video ram is GDDR5, so it isnt even the same thing. Yes it can run at the same time.
  2. I'm assuming you have a gddr3 version of the 5850 and you are wondering if you can upgrade it to gddr5?

The answer to that question is no. You cannot upgrade your graphic cards memory, it is soldered to the circuit board.
In a desktop you would have been able to simply upgrade the graphic card, but since you are on a lappy, I'm afraid you are stuck with what you have.

The only way to upgrade your graphics hardware is to buy a new computer.

    i dont have gddr3 i only have two ddr3s
  4. indeed gddr5 is completely diiferent story from ddr,ddr2 and ddr3, as you didn't know ddr3 is the max memory available for ram (GDDR5 is used for graphics g stand for graphics) and it has nothing to do with ddr3 go on.

  6. 5850 didnt come in a GDDR3 version, hes asking if the RAM and VRAM can work together, and as I stated above, yes.

wait.. so how can you install gddr5 memory, is there an instruction sorry im a noob
  10. THere is no such thing as DDR5 RAM. The only DDR5 is GDDR5 which is used in graphics cards.

He's technically right, in some laptops you can switch out components, but it is often so expensive that it's usually better to just buy a new computer.

If you give me the make and model of your laptop I can check for you.

Ok, well, your laptop has the GDDR5 version of the 5850, so that is good news! :)

Theoretically, you can actually switch the GPU in your lappy.

However, an upgrade that would make more than a neglectable difference would probably cost you at least $300.
It would also require you to disasseble your laptop, not something i recommend if you are not computer savvy.

This company is one of a few that do sell and offert support for this kind of upgrade:
