Can I change the maximum ram on my laptop?

Hello, I have this Gateway laptop that I took from my friends who didn't want it because it's infested with viruses so they just gave it to me. The bad part is that the maximum ram on the laptop is 1GB. Just wanting to know is there anyway I could change that?
The laptop is a Gateway W323-UI1

Does it have XP or Vista? I would imagine, if it's DDR memory, it should at least be able to got to 2GB, and if it's DDR2, you should be able to go to 4GB. If it has Vista, it's probably DDR2.

What model is the lappy? I can't imagine a lappy only supporting a max of 1gb considering Win7 requires twice that. My guess it that it currently has 1gb, but supports up to 8+. Anyway, there's no way to tell without knowing what model the lappy is.

If that is the addressable limit by the motherboard, then no you can't change it. You should be able find that out by looking up the model #.

You’re stuck with 1GB max. If I were you I'd load Linux on it.

I would imagine you could run 2 X 1GB DDR sticks in that laptop, it has WIFI, it can't that old to not support 2GB.

With that being said, that thing is a dog, slap Ubuntu or Zorin on it and run it into the ground.
