CD drive not showing up?

Dear Tom's Hardware,

Can anyone help me troubleshoot this? I can't remember exactly when, but not too shortly ago the CD drive no longer functions.

It doesn't show up in my device manager. Actually it did once when I chose to scan for new hardware and it showed up showing Code 10.

Doing a quick search for the terms "Code 10 CD drive" pulled up an article explaining that iTunes sometimes interferes with the CD drive. So I uninstalled it and now I can't even make the computer recognize that the CD drive exists through my previous technique?

I'm running a Vista 32-bit HP pavillion dv2500 laptop that is about 3 years old.

I'd really like to have disc functionality on my laptop again.

Thanks,

-MP

I'm looking at uninstalling any CD burning software that I might have downloaded recently though I'm pretty sure there isn't any.

When I look at the startup message I don't see the cd drive listed. Is this a software issue, or driver issue, that the computer isn't recognizing the drive before it boots Windows?
