6770 will not install

Forum Graphics & Displays : AMD Radeon 6770 will not install

Word :    Username :

I recent purchased an XFX Radeon HD 6770 to replace my HD 4650, also an xfx card. The old 4650 card worked fine, but I was looking for a bit of a performance boost. Anyway, after installing the card and booting into windows all I get for drivers is the Standard VGA adapter. I have tried removing the old drivers and reinstalling, but no luck as yet. I also did a few updates to my gigabyte MB (bios and updated the northbridge chipset) but that didn't fix anything either.

System specs:
Mobo: GA-890GPA-UD3H
4 GBs RAM
Antec 750W PSU
PhenomII x2 555

Not sure what to do at this point, I returned the card to Best Buy this morning and they let me get a new 6770. Still having the same problem though, and I can't get the darn drivers installed. After CCC finishes the install I get a message the current display adapter is not compatible and I need to install the right drivers or enable my ati card. Except, my new card doesn't show up anywhere. If I check the details on the Standard VGA driver, I see the chip type listed as ATI ATOMBIOS..bios info 1.0 DAC type 8 bit and only 16 MB of available graphics memory.

o.O any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Oh, and I did go in and reset the init display to peg in the bios. I read something about setting surround view to enabled, but I couldn't find that value anywhere in the bios.

Sounds like your installing the wrong driver or you didn't plug in the power cord to the video card.

From what I understand the 6770 is only supposed to ship to OEM's for use in Pre-builts, how did you get one from Best Buy?

Evil Bestbuy at it again slapping new stickers on 5770s, lol.

But your problem could just be that, technically the 6770 isn't released yet for retail. If this is indeed the case, flashing the BIOS to a 5770 would work, or wait until it finally launches with new drivers.

But IMO, just return it and get this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] -_-Product
Much better card for the money.

Reply to Timop

I can't get on AMD's website right now to find anything out, it's down for maintenance.

The card is plugged in, using the 8 ping PCI-E connector.

This is an XFX card, came in a new retail box. I'm using the driver package from ATI/AMD site that comes up when I go through the selection for the 6xxx HD Series. The install file is listed as 11-3_vista64_64dd for the driver and 11-3_vista64_win7_64_dd_ccc.ocl for the full suite.

I didn't mention it in my original post but I'm using Win 7 64.

Reply to Klown

Weird, I can't find one for sale anywhere, not even Newegg.

What driver version is on the cd that was in the box? I mean that one would have to work right? Maybe it's some special release driver or something. Weird.

Yeah, that's the fun part with XFX, they don't come with drivers on the cd. There is an installer that points you to the ATI/AMD site and pulls the drivers from there. Kind of annoyed at the moment to be honest. The "quick install guide" even looks generic, the pictures and guide suggest that there should be two 6 pin connectors on the card. Yet I can only find the one 8 pin connector. >.< I don't think I will purchase another xfx card anytime soon. Anyway, thanks for all your help. I'll post again when I get the 6850 and have it up and running.

Having the exact same issue right now with my step-dad's PC. I knew the 6770 was just a rebrand of the 5770, but I figured having the higher number would give it a bit more resale value in a few years, when people have forgotten that fact.

So basically XFX and Best Buy are douchebags. Returning it to the store for a 5770, and if possible a partial refund for the hassle.

Reply to phaedrus2129

I only buy XFX and EVGA. I certainly would research the card before I bought it though.

I mean I never even heard of a 6770 until I read this post.

I've got a thread going over at overclock.net about it.

One of two things as happened:
A.) AMD is going to release the HD6770 as a retail product, despite their promises that they would not, and XFX and Best Buy just jumped the gun and released it early (must have been >month early, since the next driver version still does not support the 6770)

Or B.) XFX/Best Buy are selling these cards without drivers, without AMD's authorization, in which case they're in a major, major breach of contract.

It's AMD's decision to rebrand HD 5770 as HD 6770, not Bestbuy.

true, but amd hasn't released it yet for public so it's not even mentioned in the driver files, thats the reason the ccc gives op problems about compatibility

According to this chart, the HD6770 is not even close the a HD5770 "Re-brand".

The HD6770 has much better specifications. Look at the bandwidth differences. Gpu is BARTS not JUNIPER.

Obviously XFX/Best Buy decided to sell this before there were even drivers released for it.

That was before AMD changed naming methods, doesn't that supposed "6770" look suspiciously like a 6870?

what does GPU-Z make out of it?

Reply to Kari

Returned my xfx 6770 card to Best Buy today, and they told me that they have AMD staff that work in their corporate offices that told them to release this product. What a joke! I doubt that. could not install drivers then best buy told me it's my fault had to drive 50 miles to get to best buy now I have to drive 50 miles back to return it and when I told best buy about this and asked them if I could get a discount on another card they said no they don't do that and the 25$ to 30$ I spent on gas not including all day screwing around with this card was my problem best buy is a joke and they just lost me as a costumer Newegg is better and cheaper anyway. I truly hate best buy over this crap

That is really strange. As Kari said though, did anyone try GPU-Z to see if even it has heard of it yet?

that leak is quite old. i think at first AMD wants to name 6870/6850 as 6770/6750 but suddenly they decide to change the name scheme. when AMD finally release the card many those who didn't follow the story closely think that 6870 is faster than 5870. btw did AMD really want to officially launch this 5770 rebrand?

Just to give everyone a heads up. I just spoke to AMD and they are not supporting the 6770 card for retail. Mark stated they have talked about releasing it to retail but have not made this step as of yet. He also checked all driver files to see if they had a driver for the 6770 and the 6750. He stated they do not have any support for these. He also checked the beta 11.4 and there is no plans to have a 6770 driver on there either. If anyone has rights to other sites like overclock.net please post this info there too.

Exactly what I thought. It's hard to believe XFX already built them, packaged them and sent them to Best Buy to sell, and there isn't even a driver released for it yet.

They obviously have a driver for the OEM's but hasn't been released publicly.

Well, most OEMs (such as HP) have an option of a 6770, so maybe check out their support site for downloads. I'm looking at them right now.

Also, it is possible AMD could call this a 5770. The real number that matters is the device ID. In fact, you probably could hack to drivers to work (but why would you, of course).

Dell and HP have OEM drivers for the 6750 and 6770, but they're Windows 7 x64 only. If you're running anything else, good luck to you.

Funny, the box claims support for "Windows 7, Vista, XP, Linux, and FreeBSD".
False advertising is fun!

Yep, found it! Off of the drivers on HP's site:

"ATI Radeon HD 6770" = ati2mtag_Evergreen, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_68B8&SUBSYS_6881103C

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc [...] 61009#N146

Get the newest Video drivers, extract, then run the ATI installer. I have no idea if these do any checks to see if you really have a HP computer or if they are only for HP 6770s, but worth a try if anyone hasn't returned their 6770 yet.

The 6700 series has been changed to a retail product. When a new card launches it is sometimes not a part of the current Catalyst suite. Make sure that you are using the drivers from our disc instead of the web or you use the 8.82 version in support and drivers or we have also put links to the latest driver for the 6700 series on the product page for the 6770 and 6750.

I bought one of these cards and was unable to get the drivers directly from ATI to play nice, however I went to the XFX site and downloaded the drivers listed under the page for this specific card, and it's working like a charm. I almost returned it after 10 minutes of fiddling with different drivers, but now I'll hold on to it.

He stated there were NO drivers on the disc, only an installer that pointed him to the ATI website.

I never thought to check XFX website, frankly because I always go to the AMD website for drivers, but apparently you need to get your drivers from XFX directly?

Having just purchased this card and successfully installed it, I can say that there are drivers on the disc. One would assume the latest drivers straight from AMD would support this card, however that was not the case. I had to rollback my drivers to those from XFX's site to get the card working after I updated with AMD's most recent release.

That said, the disc does by default say "newer drivers are available" and does point you to the AMD site in lieu of installing from disc, however the proper drivers are on the disc and you can choose to ignore the default advice and use those included with the card.

Reply to silvrswt

So basically your saying this is user error on this guys part. Should have known.

Can't really knock the guy though, I never use the cd, I always go get the latest driver from the manufacturers website, but I guess in this case, AMD wasn't even ready for these to be shipped out yet.

Yeah, it is an unfortunate mess. Fortunately XFX should get the newest drivers out as fast as AMD does, since all they have to do is add the card's device ID and info to the stock AMD drivers (as those are the correct drivers, they just don't recognize the card).
