hey guys

I'm looking to upgrade my gpu and I stumbled across these three. The resolution I play on is 1440x900 on a Viewsonic 19" widescreen. I'm not changing my screen anytime soon.

I play all sorts of games at that resolution (Fallout NV, Crysis 2, Shift 2, Metro 2033, GTAIV, COD Black Ops, etc...).

Frankly, I was leaning towards the 6850, I found that it fits my budget nicely, it only needs one power connector and I considered it fairly future proof. I don't change vga's much really, until I start seeing a noticeable performance drop in a few games.

My current setup:

- Intel i3-540 @ 3.06GHz (stock; plan to overclock to 4.0GHz if possible)
- MSI H55-GD65
- 4GB DDR3 @ 1333MHz
- Gecube Radeon 3870 512mb gddr4 X-Turbo (factory oc)
- Cooler Master eXtreme power plus 500W (30A @ 12v I think)

I'm just wondering, would the 460gtx 1g or 6870 1gb be overkill for my needs?

I'd appreciate any suggestions. Maybe something other than these 3?

All three of those cards would serve you very well up to 1080p. At 1440xp900 you will be playing at high graphics for most games.

The 6850 trades blows with the 460 gtx 1gb. The 6780 would be a little ahead in most games.

I would go with the best priced one you can find.

If you plan to add another later, the AMD's scale better.

At that price range, I'd say the 5850 is ya best bet. Guru3D uses the following games in their test suite, COD-MW, Bad Company 2, Dirt 2, Far Cry 2, Metro 2033, Dawn of Discovery, Crysis Warhead. Total fps (summing fps in each game @ 1920 x 1200) for the various options in parenthesis (single card / SL or CF) are tabulated below along with their cost in dollars per frame single card - CF or SLI:

$155.00 460-768 MB (314/592) $0.49 - $0.52
$155.00 6850 (371/634) $0.42 - $0.49
$190.00 6870 (434/701) $0.44 - $0.54
$245.00 6950 (479/751) $0.51 - $0.65
