Malfunctioning System

I have a HP Pavilion slimline that can complete lock up at times. If I'm lucky i can actually get it to run for a day but once i shut it down and try it again it will completely lock up on me. I've tried reformatting it, with both linux and windows, with no luck. I've tried swapping out the memory but it still does it. Some time it will take a good 5 minutes just for it to boot up the Bios screen on initial start up. I think it might be a motherboard problem but like i said before it still runs fine on certain days. Does anyone know what the problem can be?

AMD Athlon X2 4000 2.1 GHz
2 GB Memory
250GB hard drive

Suspicion goes against either motherboard or PSU! If you can try another PSU even if left out of the case we will know.
