Hi,
How much Import duty on a laptop bought through a US based companies
website when the UK consumer? It is a highend machine which costs about
2000 pounds. The UK customs commodity code is: 8471 3000 00. I know I'd
have to pay 17.5 percent UK VAT how much import duty would I have to
pay as well?

It probably makes more sense to fly Virgin, buy it in the US and bring
it back, no questions will be asked in my experience.

None! There's no duty on laptops purchased in the US and shipped to the UK,
only VAT.

Just to confirm James, since 1/1/2005 no import duty is paid on laptops
purchased in the US and shipped to ANY EU country. You only have to pay
VAT. Therefore it is an excellent choice for expensive laptops, since in
the UK they usually cost same ££ as $$, which makes them around 100%
more expensive. Buy from US (a REPUTABLE seller) and you only pay around
25% instead of 100% extra, including shipping costs.
