I ordered a new GPU from Newegg today and then my friend majoring in Computer Engineering promptly told me that the card I had ordered would only produce a 5% increase in performance, and was very disappointed.

I have a Radeon 4670 512mb in right now, and used to have a GeForce 250 1GB which was really nice, but unfortunately I had to return.

Will this 450 be better or worse than the 250 I used to have? I really liked the 250. I got the 450 on sale $85, and my friend also said it wasn't worth it and I could have gotten a way better card for the money by ATI, is this true? Would it be wise to return the card when I get it and get a new one?

I have 6gb of ram and an i7 processor, and I want to be able to run Crysis at maximum settings, will an overclocked GTS 450 be able to handle that?

No card for $85 would be substantially better then the GTS450. For an extra $15 after rebate you could get the 5770 which performs better in most games. Or for $25 more after rebate you could get a GTX 460 768mb which outperforms the 5770.

Depending on resolution, no you won't be able to run crysis at max settings at 60fps.

I think the better question here is why youve spent all that money on an i7 and 6gb of ram and only gotten an 85 dollar video card.

The i5 750 (or an equivalent) will produce the same fps 99% of the time and its about half the price. Dont get me wrong I got an i7 920 the week they came out but I also blew 300 on the mobo and 175 on a psu and 300 (IIRC) on ram... so it was an overhaul.

Your best course of action in today's market is to get the biggest baddest video card and then get a good performing mid range CPU. So while you might not have any money left over at this point, unless you are totally SOL for a video card, Id start saving up for a 580 or 6970. If you are completely down without a card then suffer with what you have purchased (can put it in another box later) and get a higher end card asap.

250 1gb specs: http://www.geforce.com/#/Hardware/GPUs/geforce-gts250/specifications

450 specs: http://www.geforce.com/#/Hardware/GPUs/geforce-gts-450/specifications

so with the 250 you had a 256bit mem interface and you only have half that with the 450... that means a narrower road to push all that data through... granted the speed is faster (3600 vs 2200) but in the end the 250 will be better because of the texture fill rate... 47 vs 25 in the 450. You literally have half the power with the 450.

Hope this helps... sorry you got a slower card though especially since on newegg theres a 250 for 94 bucks.

The GTS450 is better than the 4670 but not by much and the GTS250 beats the GTS450 by a lot.Your friend was right in the fact that you could have gotten a better card for your money.

You can get a 5770 for about $120 and $100 after MIR + Free Shipping. It's a little more than what you paid but it's about double the performance of the GTS450 and about 30% more powerful than the GTS250.

after looking for a review for a while I came across this one where a guy bench marked the 250, 450, 460, and 5770 (also threw in a 480 for good measure I guess). The 450 is a better card than the 250 but not by a ton. Ironically the physx performance is worse in the 450 but in every other aspect its at least 6 or 10 fps better than the 250.

I wouldn't make the gab between 5770 and 450 that high, more like 20%.

Yeah, I would probably return it if you specifically want something better than your old GTS 250. The HD5770 would be a nice amount faster but nothing huge. I would recommend spending more for either the GTX 460 dirtmountain linked earlier or better yet this HD5850 for $150 is a great deal if you can afford it;

FYI the GTX 460 768mb is roughly 50-55% faster than the GTS 250 on average at high settings/resolution while the HD5850 is 85-90% faster. Both can also overclock a very large amount, usually over 30%.

I believe you are thinking of the GT 240 instead of the GTS 450.

How so?

The 5770 isn't a huge improvement over the GTS450 but it is still more powerful none the less.I mainly suggested it because I thought your budget was tight.Anyway i'm sure you will be happy with the 5770.

What resoultion are you gaming at again?

Whats your full system specs?(mobo/cpu/ram/etc.)

Because in actual gaming the GTS 450 is faster than the GTS 250? If you had replaced every instance of "GTS 450" in your post with "GT 240" it would have been rather accurate but as is it's simply very far off the mark.

OMG, when will people learn that theoretical performance does not = real world performance.
