Computer won't boot if HDMI cable connected

This computer is being used as HTPC o HDMI is important.

If the HDMI cable is connected at boot time, the BIOS won't boot.

However, if I boot into Windows with VGA cable connected, I can then connect the HDMI cable and it will work.

The graphics are Intel onboard graphics. I can't remember the exact chipset, but it's an old one from 2008.

Apparently this is a widespread issue. I have a Dell Studio, and the advice seems to fall into two categories: either (1) upgrade the BIOS or (2) downgrade the BIOS. Almost funny!
