Depends on your motherboard but upgrading the cpu on such old computer is unwise investment.

That would be a Willamette processor, so need model of Dell.

Power to run high clock speeds means heat. Removal of heat is your limit.

Such a old processor is obsolete. I have a old 1.6 cpu and a 486 plus a 3 gigger somewhere in the parts bin.

What you are asking is how much can you overclock a CPU.

Your specific result will be determined by everything connected to that specific CPU in your specific case. Trying to go beyond the limit will burn up your CPU.

In the old days they managed to run computer tape at about 62 mph before it became unstable and unable to hold true.

About 4.5ghz if you have some liquid nitrogen around and some skill at creating a custum cooling block.

The P4 you have is way past its usable life. The only way to speed up your computer is to basically buy a new one. Sorry to be so blunt, but it is what it is.

+1 ^ on buying a new one...

And overclocking on a Dell motherboard is difficult at best, so if you are at 1.78GHz that's it.

However, there are any number of ways to make a system run faster as a whole: get more (and faster) RAM; reinstall the OS (or try Linux); get a faster hard drive (especially if you have SATA ports available)....
